I think it's the culture that is not enticing the young men and women to enlist plus who wants to fight for these idiot generals and Sec. I like to eat so I'd go back to them paying for chow. There were times when I would prefer the money and go separate rats but I would go back to them paying for my chow because the separate rats just didn't cut it. This is take home pay because you're still getting housing and meals for free if you opt for that. As soon as you finish basic you go up to E-2 and a raise. Benefits are nothing to sneezing at but they are not that much. Yeah we used to get that same BS letter every year too. $35k on top of salary, benefits and COLA is a nice score for an 18-21 year old kid. Can’t understand why everyone is not rushing down to the local recruiter! Not a whole lot of money considering what you are asking them and their families to put on the line. The Army offer a $20K bonus and still fell short. The Navy raised its maximum recruitment age to 41 and offered up to $35k in enlistment bonuses in addition to pay that was bumped and still did not meet their goals. They’ve been offering some hefty recruitment and retention bonuses and still only two out of the 5 branches met their recruiting goals. People are also just tired of useless foreign wars - at least, they used to be. This is also how the army got liberal in the 1st place. They used to recruit the poor, now the poor don't need to join.
